"Remove the shadow" sounds like one job. It is really four different jobs that look alike in a thumbnail — a hard-edged railing shadow across a shirt, a black band under the eyes at noon, a grey smear on the wall behind a product, a soft gradient across a page on your desk. Each needs a different fix, and the method that rescues one will quietly make another worse.

Four kinds of shadow, and which ones are fixable

  • Cast shadows — shapes thrown onto your subject by something outside the frame: your body, a tree, a window frame, the phone held over a page. They have recognisable edges.
  • Hard shadows on a face — what overhead sun does to people. Dark eye sockets, a wedge under the nose, a line across the chin from a hat brim.
  • Background shadows — grey areas cast onto a flat wall or backdrop. The classic product-photo and ID-photo problem.
  • Document shadows — wide, soft gradients across a page, usually because you were standing between the page and the light.

Difficulty order, easiest first: background shadows on a plain surface, document shadows, cast shadows over simple textures, cast shadows over patterned areas, and — harder than all of them by a distance — hard shadows on a face. Faces are worst for a specific reason: skin in shadow is lit by light that bounced off the sky, a wall, the pavement, so it is a different colour and a different softness from the sunlit half of the same face. Matching the two halves is not a brightness problem, it is a relighting problem, and that explains most of what follows.

The honest test

Cover the shadowed area with your thumb on screen. If you genuinely cannot guess what is underneath, no tool is "removing" a shadow — it is inventing content. That can look great, and it is still a different promise from the one you thought you were getting.

Why brightening the shadows usually doesn't work

Everyone tries this first: find the Shadows slider, drag it right. On iPhone that's Edit, then swiping the control strip along to Shadows; in Lightroom it's the Light panel; in Google Photos it's under Adjust. It works maybe one time in five.

It lifts everything dark, not just the shadow. A Shadows slider is tonal, not spatial — it targets a range of brightness values wherever they appear. Push it and you brighten hair, pupils, a navy jacket, and the dark side of every object in shot. The picture goes flat and slightly milky.

The colour comes out wrong and stays wrong. Open shade is lit by blue sky; direct sun is warmer. Brighten a shadow and you get a lighter blue-grey patch next to warm skin. Until you correct white balance in that area separately, it reads as a stain rather than as light.

Noise was hiding in there. Dark pixels carry the least signal, so every stop you lift multiplies noise along with detail — especially the chroma speckle that shows badly on skin. On an 8-bit phone JPEG you often get banding too.

The edge survives. Brightening a hard cast shadow changes its brightness but not its boundary. The line is still a line, only lighter, which often looks worse because it now reads as a smudge.

Sometimes there's nothing left. If the shadow clipped to pure black the data is gone, and lifting it gives grey mush. Drag the slider to maximum for a second: if no detail appears, it never will.

This is exactly why a slider fixes document shadows and fails on faces. A page is one flat tone, so lifting a range of brightness values happens to be precisely the right operation. A face has structure at every brightness level, so it is precisely the wrong one.

Match the method to the shadow

Your phone's editor — soft, wide, low-stakes shadows

Fine for document gradients and mild unevenness. On iPhone, tap Edit and swipe the controls along to Shadows, Brilliance and Black Point. Brilliance is worth knowing: it brightens dark areas while holding highlights back rather than shifting one flat range, so it usually does less damage. Google Photos keeps its equivalents under Adjust, alongside Portrait light — which relights faces specifically and is the one phone tool worth trying on a portrait first. What no phone slider will do is erase something with an edge.

Lightroom — shadows you can outline

What makes Lightroom better isn't its sliders, it's masking. Open the Masking panel and create a mask with Brush, Linear Gradient or Radial Gradient, or let it find one with Select Subject, Select Sky, Background, People or Objects. Adjustments then apply only inside that mask, which kills the "it brightened everything" problem outright.

  1. Before anything else, pull Highlights down 20–30. Narrowing the gap costs nothing and means you have to lift the shadow less far.
  2. Masking, then Brush. Feather high (70–100) for soft shadows, low for hard-edged ones. Paint the shadowed area only, red overlay on.
  3. Inside the mask, raise Exposure until the halves roughly match — usually less than you expect, around +0.4 to +1.0.
  4. Fix the colour: Temp warmer, a little more Saturation, Clarity down slightly. Lifted shadows come out cool, flat and crunchy, and this is the step that makes them read as skin or fabric again.
  5. On a face, give the eye sockets a second pass with a small soft brush at low flow. They're darkest and need more lift than the rest.
  6. Check at 100% for halos, then at thumbnail size — thumbnail is how people will actually see it, and it exposes grey patches you miss while zoomed in.

Twenty minutes on a difficult frame, fully under your control, which is what you want when the picture will be printed large.

Photoshop — the most control, and the most time

Photoshop is genuinely better than everything else when the shadow crosses detail you care about: a face, a logo, a patterned fabric. Nothing else lets you decide region by region what the answer should be.

Three tools carry most of the work: the Camera Raw Filter for masked exposure, dodge and burn built up in light passes on a 50% grey layer for faces, and the Remove tool — in the Spot Healing Brush group, with Generative AI settable to on, off or Auto in its options bar — when you want the shadow gone rather than corrected. The trade-off, plainly: Photoshop beats any automatic tool on a genuinely difficult image, and costs thirty to sixty minutes plus the experience to recognise when your own result looks wrong. For one hero image, good trade. For twelve product listings, not.

AI shadow removers — when you just need it gone

The newer approach doesn't brighten the shadow. Where it's weaker than Photoshop: you don't get to make the call. If the model guesses wrong about what was under the shadow — an unusual pattern, a face at an awkward angle — the result looks plausible and is wrong, and your options are run it again or do it by hand. On plain surfaces that essentially never happens; on complicated ones it sometimes does.

Scanner apps — anything printed

If the shadow is on a document, stop editing and reshoot in a scanning mode. Scanner modes flatten perspective and even out brightness across the page in one pass, which is exactly the document-shadow problem. The iPhone scans pages from the Notes app and from Files; Google Drive and Adobe Scan do the same. Ten seconds of reshooting beats ten minutes of editing.

How to stop making shadows in the first place

Nothing above beats getting the light right in the two seconds before you press the shutter.

  • Avoid overhead sun. Between roughly 11am and 3pm the sun is high enough to put every face into raccoon eyes. An hour after sunrise, an hour before sunset, or any overcast day, and the problem doesn't arise.
  • Open shade, not dappled shade. The shadow side of a building gives even light. Under a tree gives you a leopard pattern — the hardest shadow of all to remove afterwards.
  • Turn people away from the sun and force the flash on. Backlight plus fill flash is the most reliable outdoor portrait trick at midday. It feels wrong. It works.
  • Get the subject away from the wall. A metre of separation moves the cast shadow out of frame entirely. Background shadow is one of the commonest reasons passport photos get rejected, and one step backwards fixes it.
  • For products: one window, one piece of white card. Light from the side, card opposite to bounce fill back in. Two lights isn't better than one light and a bounce — it's just two sets of shadows.
  • For documents, don't stand over the page. Your own body is the shadow. Put the page near a window, stand to one side, shoot at a slight angle, and let the scanning app straighten it.
  • Watch for glare while you're there. The same hard light that casts shadows puts hotspots on glasses, laminated cards and glossy paper — a different problem with a different fix, and much harder to repair afterwards.
Worth building the habit

Before you shoot, look at the darkest part of the frame instead of the brightest. Your eyes adapt to shadows in real life and the sensor does not, so a shadow that seems mild while you're standing there almost always comes out heavier in the file.

Knowing when to stop

Some photos can't be fixed. Stop when the shadow is pure black at 100% zoom with the slider maxed, when the lit side is clipped to white, or when the shadow crosses fine detail you can name — label text, a printed pattern, a serial number — because any reconstruction is guessing at it, and a confident wrong guess is worse than a visible shadow.
