There is no "remove shadow" button in Photoshop. There are half a dozen tools that each undo part of what a shadow does, and most tutorials fail because they demonstrate one tool on one flattering example. A shadow on the wall behind someone and a shadow cutting across their cheekbone are not the same problem and don't have the same fix.

Below are the four methods that hold up on real files — Generative Fill, Curves with a mask, Dodge and Burn, and Blend If — plus the part tutorials skip: where each one falls apart.

Start by looking at the edge of the shadow

Before you pick a tool, zoom to 100% and look at where the shadow ends. That edge tells you which method has a chance.

  • Soft-edged shadow — overcast light, window light, bounced flash. The darkness fades over dozens of pixels and the detail underneath is still recorded, just darker. These are tonal problems, and they have the highest success rate here.
  • Hard-edged shadow — direct sun, on-camera flash, a railing, blinds, a hat brim, your own head. The transition happens in a few pixels. Detail may survive underneath, but the edge itself will fight you, because that edge is baked into the pixels.
  • Clipped shadow — the shadow has hit pure black. There is nothing under it. Any "removal" here is invention, not recovery.
The 10-second test

Open Window > Info, grab the Eyedropper, and hover over the darkest part of the shadow. If the RGB values read above roughly 20/20/20, there is detail to pull out. Under about 8/8/8, the sensor recorded nothing and no tool will bring it back — a generative tool will simply paint something plausible there instead.

Method 1: Generative Fill, fastest on backgrounds and floors

  1. Select the shadow with the Selection Brush or the Lasso. Push the selection 10–20 pixels past the shadow into clean pixels. Tight selections are the main cause of a visible seam.
  2. Click Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar.
  3. Pick a model in the model picker — Photoshop now offers several Firefly models plus partner models (Gemini and FLUX variants). The Firefly fill model is the conservative choice and matches existing texture best; the partner models invent more, which is the opposite of what you want here.
  4. Leave the prompt blank. Adobe's own documentation says an empty prompt fills the selection using the surrounding pixels — exactly the behaviour you want. Typing "remove shadow" tends to get you a new object rather than a clean patch.
  5. Generate, then step through the variations in the Properties panel and take the least interesting one. It generates onto its own layer, so you can mask it back if part of it is wrong.

Before you spend a generation, try the Remove tool: pick it from the Tools panel, set the brush slightly larger than the shadow, and draw a loop around it. Turn on Create new layer in the Options bar so it stays non-destructive. Adobe states the Remove tool does not consume generative credits, which makes it the cheaper first attempt — though users have reported deductions with its Generative AI mode forced on rather than left on Auto, so check your balance the first time.

Where it fails: anywhere the shadow crosses something recognisable. Over a face, printed text, a logo or a fabric weave, the fill re-renders that content and it will not match. Over a repeating surface — painted wall, seamless backdrop, wood floor, tabletop — it is excellent and takes under a minute.

Method 2: Curves plus a mask, the one that survives at print size

  1. Add a Curves adjustment layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves).
  2. Drag the middle of the curve upward until the shadowed area looks right. Ignore the fact that the rest of the photo is now blown out.
  3. Click the layer mask and press Ctrl/Cmd+I to invert it. The image snaps back to normal and your correction is hidden.
  4. Paint the correction back in with a white brush: hardness 0, and flow around 10–15%. Build it up over several passes. Low flow is the entire trick — one pass at full strength gives you a glowing patch that reads as an edit from across the room.
  5. If the boundary is still visible, blur the mask itself: with the mask selected, Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, 2–10 px depending on the size of the file.

Then do the part almost everyone skips. A shadow isn't only darker — it's also lower in contrast and usually cooler, since it's lit by sky rather than sun. Add a second Curves layer with a gentle S-curve masked to the same area to put contrast back, and if the shadow was blue, pull the blue channel down slightly in the lower half. Fixing brightness without fixing contrast and colour is the biggest reason a corrected shadow still reads as corrected.

Where it fails: hard edges. Lift a hard-edged shadow this way and you're left with a soft grey line tracing exactly where the old edge was, no matter how carefully you paint. For those, mask the correction to the shadow's exact shape with a selection rather than a brush, or hand that edge to Generative Fill.

Method 3: Dodge and Burn, still the most controllable option

The Dodge and Burn tools (O) chew up pixels and shift saturation when used directly. Do it on a separate grey layer instead:

  1. Layer > New > Layer. Set Mode to Soft Light and tick "Fill with Soft-Light-neutral color (50% gray)".
  2. Take a normal brush, white, hardness 0, flow 3–5%.
  3. Paint over the shadow. Each stroke lightens a little. Switch to black to darken.
  4. Too strong overall? Drop the layer's opacity. Went somewhere you shouldn't have? Paint 50% grey back over it and it's as if you never touched it.

This is where Photoshop beats every automatic tool, including ours, and it isn't close. You can lift one eye socket and not the other, keep the shadow that gives a nose its shape while killing the one thrown by a hat brim. No automatic relight makes those distinctions on purpose. The cost is time: a face done properly is five to twenty minutes of small strokes.

Method 4: Blend If, the setting that makes the others blend

Blend If limits a layer's effect by brightness, so a lightening layer can touch only the dark pixels and leave the midtones alone. It's a mask you don't have to paint.

  1. Put your lightening on its own layer — a Curves layer, or a duplicate of the background set to Screen mode.
  2. Double-click the layer to open Layer Style, and find Blend If under Advanced Blending.
  3. Use the Underlying Layer slider. Drag the white triangle to the left and the layer now only affects pixels darker than that value.
  4. Hold Alt/Option and drag one half of that triangle away from the other. It splits, and the effect now fades gradually between the two numbers instead of cutting off at a hard line. Adobe calls that gap the "partially blended" range; it's the difference between invisible and obviously retouched.

Where it fails: when something else in the frame shares the shadow's brightness. Dark hair, a navy jacket, a black chair. Blend If sees brightness, not objects, so it lifts those too. Add a normal layer mask on top to paint them out.

How to remove shadows from a face in Photoshop

Faces are the hardest case and the most common request. This order works:

  1. Camera Raw Filter for the global lift. Filter > Camera Raw Filter (Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+A). Raise Shadows, then pull Blacks down slightly so the image doesn't go flat. Use the Masking panel: it detects People and lets you restrict the mask to parts of a person such as facial skin, so the lift lands on skin and not on hair or the wall behind. This alone handles half of soft face shadows.
  2. Adjustment Brush for the local work. Photoshop's Adjustment Brush paints an adjustment directly onto the image and, per Adobe, creates a real adjustment layer with a layer mask behind the scenes, so nothing is destructive. Its "Apply to object" button fills a detected object in one click, then you refine the values in the Properties panel.
  3. Dodge and Burn on a grey layer for the last ten percent — the line under the nose, the edge of a hat brim, the hollow under one eye.

Two things people consistently get wrong here. First, shadowed skin is both cooler and more saturated than lit skin, so lifting exposure alone produces grey, waxy patches. Desaturate a little and warm the area as you lift it. Second, don't remove all of it. A face with no shadow reads as flat and synthetic. The target is to reduce the shadow until it looks like soft light, not to delete it.

When the shadow genuinely can't be removed

Three situations where the honest answer is to stop editing and reshoot:

  • Clipped to black. RGB near zero. There is no information to recover. Generative Fill will happily paint something in, and on a face that invention will not look like your subject.
  • Hard shadow over fine detail. Text on a document photographed under a hard shadow is often unreadable inside the shadow because the letters have merged into the background. Lifting exposure just gives you louder noise.
  • Coloured light in the shadow. A red cast from a phone case, a green cast from a tinted window. Lifting exposure gives you a bright red or green patch, because the problem was never brightness. That's a colour-correction job with a different set of tools.

Worth naming the opposite failure too: if what's ruining the photo is a blown-out bright patch rather than a dark one, none of the above applies — see removing glare from a photo for that.

Which method for which shadow

  • Soft shadow on a face — Camera Raw Shadows, then Curves with a painted mask. 5–15 minutes.
  • Hard shadow on a plain wall, backdrop or floor — Remove tool first, Generative Fill if it smears. 1–3 minutes.
  • Shadow across a document or receipt — Camera Raw Shadows plus a Levels white point. Works if the text is still legible inside the shadow. 3–5 minutes.
  • Shadow behind a product on seamless — Remove tool, then Generative Fill on whatever's left. 2–5 minutes.
  • Shadow cutting across a group photo — Curves, mask and Blend If for the bulk, then Dodge and Burn on each face. 20–40 minutes of real work.

Q.01 Is there a one-click way to remove shadows in Photoshop?
Not a shadow-specific one. The closest things are the Remove tool with Find distractions, and Generative Fill with a blank prompt — both are object-removal features pointed at a shadow rather than tools built for it. On a plain background either can finish the job in one pass. On a face, neither does, because they re-render the area instead of relighting it.
Q.02 Does Generative Fill use up my Adobe credits when I remove a shadow?
Yes — each generation spends generative credits from your Creative Cloud plan, and you'll often run two or three before you like a result. Adobe's documentation states the Remove tool does not consume generative credits, so for a small shadow it's worth trying the Remove tool first and keeping Generative Fill for what it can't handle.
Q.03 How do I remove a shadow from a face without the skin looking flat or grey?
Correct colour, not just brightness. Shadowed skin is cooler and more saturated than lit skin, so raising exposure alone gives you a grey, waxy patch. Desaturate slightly and warm the area as you lift it, add a gentle S-curve to restore the contrast you flattened, and stop before the shadow is fully gone — a face with no shadow at all reads as fake.

Shadows/Highlights is automatic and looks at the neighbourhood around each pixel to decide what's shadow, so it's fast but applies to the whole image and produces halos if you push it. Curves is manual and can be masked to exactly the area you want. Shadows/Highlights also isn't an adjustment layer — convert the layer to a Smart Object first if you want it to stay editable.
Q.05 Why is there still a visible line where the shadow used to be?
You lifted a hard-edged shadow with a soft brush. The blur that made that edge is recorded in the pixels themselves, so brightening the inside leaves the transition behind as a grey line. Either mask the correction to the shadow's exact shape with a selection instead of a brush, or select across the edge and let Generative Fill rebuild that strip.
Q.06 Can Photoshop fix a shadow in a passport photo?
Yes, but check what's actually failing first. Most passport rejections come from shadow on the background rather than on the face, and a background shadow is usually a Curves-plus-mask job, or a selection filled with the flat background colour. Face shadows need the gentler treatment described above, since heavy retouching of facial features can itself get a photo rejected.
